When the tools are installed, neither the crankshaft nor the camshaft can rotate independently, safeguarding the engine's timing geometry throughout disassembly and reassembly. This controlled locking eliminates guesswork when restoring timing after maintenance, reducing the risk of misalignment that could result in severe damage.

Another way timing tools protect the engine is by supporting proper belt or chain tensioner adjustment. During timing belt or chain replacement, the tensioner must be released and reset. Timing tools often include tensioner holding or release devices that allow technicians to control tension accurately, preventing premature wear or failure of the timing system. Correct tensioning also contributes to long-term durability and reduces the likelihood of catastrophic timing component failure.

In addition to the mechanical locking of shafts, using the correct engine timing tools saves diagnostic time and reduces human error. Without these tools, technicians must rely on timing marks that may be worn or difficult to access, increasing the chance of incorrect alignment.
